 Access Roadway

Since the 11th May, 2006, Leitrim County Council are digging up the roadway from the N4 to the Marina gates, in order to put down a new rising sewage main to service the town of Carrick on Shannon. The roadway is in a mess but hopefully it will be sorted out shortly.

On the 15th March, 2007, I was told that the County Council intends to widen the roadway and some ESB poles need to be moved before the road is finalised. Meanwhile, some stones and chippings have been put down to make the access somewhat respectable.

On the 20th June 2007, some tarmacadam was put down which improves the appearance.

Ongoing construction works continue with a new office block and housing.

On the 25th August 2008 I was told that a new footpath was to be installed on part of the roadway. Construction works continue on the Office Bulidings and housing.

Annual Gala Concert  2009

The Máire Ledwith Butler Singing Studio strives to give all students the opportunity to perform in a prestigious venue. This year, we are presenting our studio’s eleventh Anniversary Gala Concert in the National Concert Hall 30th of March, 2009.

Performing in the NCH allows young, aspiring musicians to showcase their vocal talent, whether singing as a soloist of as part of an exclusive ensemble. Last year students presented highlights from the musical Sweeney Todd . In addition to this, they had a delightful selection of songs from more familiar favourites like The Sound of Music and Joseph & the Amazing Technicoloured Dreamcoat, and some of the most popular solos from previous years. These performances demonstrated the continuous progress and vocal ability of our students.

We were delighted to welcome back Ms. Niamh Murray (soprano) to present our concert. We will also be including some additional guest performers including the ever-popular dancers from the Marie Keating School of Ballet and Suaimhneas String Quartet.

Tickets will be available through the National Concert Hall box office and on their website www.nch.ie.

Christmas Concert 2008

Our Annual Christmas Concert, which was a combined effort from both Stillorgan and Ballsbridge students, took place in St. Mary’s Church, Haddington Road. A total sum of €1,055.00 was collected from our audience in support of the Simon Community and Parish services. At this point I would like to say a huge thank you to Fr. Paul Tyrell and the parish for generously loaning us parochial rooms for our opera rehearsals.

The MAgic Flute

This November, as part of the Maire Ledwith Butler Singing Studio’s tenth birthday celebrations, the students are taking on their most ambitious projects to date. We are proud to present two very special performances: Schubert’s Lilac Time and Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

Both productions will take place in the beautiful Mill Theatre, located in the Dundrum Town Centre. Full details of tickets will be announced soon.

Lilac Time Franz Schubert

Lilac Time is a Viennese operetta constructed around the music of Franz Schubert. The original production, concerned Schubert and two of his friends, and their romantic liaisons with the three beautiful daughters of the court glass makers.

While the abbreviated version tells the same story, it focuses most particularly on Schubert and his unrequited love for Mitzi, his singing student. Too shy to tell her of his feelings, Schubert composes a Serenade for his love, and asks Baron Schober to sing it to her. Upon hearing the beautiful music, Mitzi falls madly in love with the Baron, and Schubert must seek his solace in his music. Interwoven with Schubert’s tale, are those of his friends and Mitzi’s equally attractive sisters. Lilac Time is a comic and engaging operetta, which has remained popular with audiences since its debut in Austria in 1916.

The Magic Flute Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Die Zauberflöte is an exciting tale of abduction and incarceration. The story begins with the appearance of a prince from a faraway land, Prince Tamino. He collapses in tiredness having been pursued by a ferocious serpent and is saved by the three ladies, handmaidens to the mysterious Queen of the Night. When he awakens, however, the maidens have gone and the first person he sees is Papageno the birdcatcher, who promptly claims the glory of the rescue for himself. The three ladies reappear to punish him. With Papageno tongue-tied, Tamino is shown a picture of the Queen’s daughter, Pamina, and falls passionately in love with her. Left alone, the Queen appears before him and tells him that he must save Pamina, who has been abducted by Sarastro. As she disappears into darkness, the ladies reappear and give him a magic flute to aid him on his journey – and a somewhat silly companion in the form of Papageno, who must journey with him. The travelers leave under the guidance of three spirits who will protect and guide them through their journey.

The ensuing adventures are both interesting and often hilarious as the adventurers find the Princess, encounter Sarastro’s mean-hearted and sniveling servant Monostatos, and are themselves caught by the mysterious Sarastro. They learn that things are not always what they seem, and, as with all the best adventure stories, good triumphs over evil, and all those who truly deserve happiness find it in the end.

Spring Concert 2008

Each year we strive to prepare and encourage our Junior and Leaving Certificate music students as they head into their exams. A key part of this preparation is providing a setting in which they can perform and, in so doing, build up their confidence. Our Spring Concert is dedicated to opening the stage up to these hard working students. Joining them are our 2008 Festival of Song winners, and scholarship holders from both the past year and the year ahead. We urge people to come along to this year’s lunchtime concert and support all of our singers, those who are experienced and those who are singing solo for the very first time.

The concert takes place in St. Bartholomew’s Church, Clyde Road on Sunday 9th March, beginning 1.30pm. Classicus Youth Chamber Choir and Classicus Ensemble will also appear. Tickets are available at the door, priced at €10.00, and €7.00 with concessions to retirees and students.

We hope to see you there.
